College Time Management

There is never a better opportunity to learn about time management and develop good skills, than when you are in college. If you’re a typical student, suddenly you don’t have parents reminding and nagging about all your responsibilities. It’s up to you to figure out how to manage classes, homework, friends, and activities. It can feel overwhelming, but you can do it! You just need to figure out what time management strategies work best for you.

Start with prioritizing. It’s easy to have that sudden freedom to do what you want, when you want, and with whom you want. The hard part is remembering that you still have work to do, and this work is going to be harder than what you had in high school. You need to prioritize your responsibilities with your free time. You need to attend to each. Make sure to leave yourself enough time to get through your school work, it is why you’re here after all.

Try planning in advance for your schoolwork. Your professors will give you course schedules that will allow you to know what’s coming down the road. This means you know due dates for papers and projects well ahead of time and you know when you will have exams. This gives you ample time to research, study and work without having to cram it all in at the last minute. One of the most difficult things when learning how to manage your time is reminding yourself that even though it may seem like you have forever, you actually have less time than you think. Study and doing homework takes a lot of time. If you schedule major projects or study sessions into easily managed chunks you will feel less burned out at the end and you will have plenty of time to complete your work.

Learning good time management skills is something that will carry throughout your life. Managing your time is important in any job you take, and it’s useful in your personal life. You want to be able to have fun and take care of the necessary things without having last minute stress. You need to know how to prioritize tasks, and get things done in a timely manner. It will make your life so much easier.
